Why can property taxes go up the year after I buy a new home?
The first tax bill on a new home is often based on the land only, because the house was not finished when the county set the value. The next year's bill counts the house too.
Ask the lender to set your tax money on the full value of the home, not the land-only bill. That way your payment does not jump later.
If the home will be where you live, file for the homestead exemption. In Florida the deadline is March 1. In Georgia it is April 1.
